Police: Bombs kill 6 Iraqis before end of fast

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Police say six people have been killed in a double-bombing at a market in a Shiite neighborhood in northeast Baghdad.

The explosions hit Thursday just minutes before shoppers broke the daylong fast they observe during the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Police said the roadside bombs hit simultaneously around 7 p.m. at the open-air market in in Husseiniyah. At least one woman was among the dead, and 14 people were wounded, including two children.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Shiite areas and pilgrims are frequent targets for Sunni militants seeking to reignite sectarian violence and return Iraq to the brink of civil war.
