Yosemite shuts cabins at center of rodent probe

(AP) ? More than 90 cabins in Yosemite National Park were closed several days after the site was found to be at the center of a mouse-borne virus that has been blamed for the deaths of two people, officials said Thursday.

Park officials said the double-walled design of the 91 cabins that were closed Tuesday made it easy for mice to nest between the walls. The disease is carried in the feces, urine and saliva of deer mice and other rodents.

Over the past three weeks, two people have died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after staying in one of the so-called "Signature" cabins of curry village. Another person is confirmed ill and one more likely has the virus that kills 36 percent of the people it infects.

Mike Gauthier, Yosemite chief of staff, said the design allowed for rodent infestation.

"We just weren't aware that design would lead to it," he said.

A report obtained earlier in the day said the National Park Service was warned in 2010 that efforts should be stepped up to inspect for rodents in Yosemite and prevent them from entering areas where people sleep.

The 2010 report issued by the California Department of Public Health was commissioned by the park service.

"Inspections for rodent infestations and appropriate exclusion efforts, particularly for buildings were people sleep, should be enhanced," it said.

"We worked with Yosemite to evaluate risk and make recommendations to reduce the possibility of transmission to people," added said Vicki Kramer, chief of the vector borne disease section of the health department. "That included reducing the number of mice, and excluding them from structures."

This past spring the department gave Yosemite a cleanup plan, Kramer said, similarly outlining how to appropriately deal with mouse excrement.

"Yosemite, to their credit, has taken quite a few steps to address this," she said. "But it's a wilderness area and these buildings aren't going to be tight. It's impossible to get rid of the deer mice, so there is going to be some risk to being in a wilderness area."

Further details were not immediately available. The health department said it was preparing a statement.

The report was commissioned after two park visitors fell ill after staying in Tuolumne Meadows, about 4,000 feet higher than Yosemite Valley. It said that 18 percent of mice trapped for testing at various locations around the park were positive for hantavirus.

"The identification of the second case ... underscores the ongoing risk and need for dutiful adherence to a rodent exclusion and control program," the report said.

Gauthier said he had not yet seen the report.

Meanwhile, public health workers sent warnings to more people who visited Yosemite this summer, saying they could have been exposed to the deadly rodent-borne disease. They also handed out warnings to people entering park gates.

Officials sent emails and letters on Wednesday to another 1,000 people who stayed in tent cabins in Curry Village. That was in addition to 1,700 Curry Village guests who had previously been sent such warnings.

The rustic tent cabins of historic Curry Village are a favorite among families looking to rough it in one of the nation's most majestic settings.

Park employees removing insulation have found mouse nests and droppings in some of the 91 so-called Signature cabins they had been attempting to shore up to make entry more difficult.

The deer mice most prone to carrying hantavirus pulmonary syndrome can squeeze through holes just one-quarter-inch in diameter.

The guests being warned stayed in Curry Village's tent cabins in June, July or August. So far all victims who have fallen ill stayed in the cabins in June.

The illness begins as flu-like symptoms but can quickly affected the lungs. It can take up to six weeks to incubate.

In issuing the new warnings it was unclear whether authorities expanded the boundary of potential exposure or extended the dates.

In 2011, half of the 24 U.S. hantavirus cases ended in death. But since 1993, when the virus first was identified, the average death rate is 36.39 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Most of the nearly 600 cases reported since 1993 have been in New Mexico, Colorado, Washington, Arizona and California. Most often they are isolated, so having this cluster of cases from a small area in Yosemite has perplexed public health officials.

The federal government has two epidemiologists working in the park. They are trapping mice and rodents in an effort to determine how much of the population carries the virus and to see whether there are more mice in Yosemite Valley this year than in other years.

Deer mice are distinguished from solid-colored house mice by their white bellies and gray and brown bodies.

Kramer warned people never to sweep or vacuum mouse droppings. Instead spray them with a mixture of bleach and water then wipe it up with paper towels or a mop.

    Behind the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

    Chocolate-Covered Bacon

Childhood Obesity News?discussed the publication of Mrs. Obama?s book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, which received a lot of publicity when it first became available, and continues to do so. Just a couple of weeks ago, the First Lady was a guest on a TV show called ?The View,? an appearance reported by Joanne Eglash:

When it comes to getting her hands dirty, Michelle Obama emphasizes the dietary benefits of gardening. She first came up with the concept of using gardening as a healthy political platform when trying to figure out a way to battle the childhood obesity epidemic, she explained. The result: taking her message to the public by launching the Let?s Move initiative to seek healthier lifestyles?

On one level, the advantages of a nutritious diet are so obvious as to not require discussion, it?s just stipulated. At fancy, costly weight-loss establishments, teenagers grow fruits, vegetables, and condiments. They learn about how to grow organic, and how to prepare foods for the highest nutritional payoff. It makes perfect sense to give public school students the opportunity to practice the same skills.

Since gardening is one way to attain a maximum nutrition level, it deserves an honored place in any anti-childhood obesity campaign. The point that a lot of people are missing is, sometimes it just doesn?t matter how much virtuously healthful food is available. Sometimes, a person is just plain addicted to the wrong kinds of foods. A person in this condition will walk a mile for a hit of chocolate-covered bacon, rather than consider eating the celery that?s already in the refrigerator.

The National Poll of Children?s Health, a recent research effort carried out by the University of Michigan, ascertained the issues that grownups are most concerned about in regard to kids? health. They go around asking adults for their opinion on what the most serious children?s health problem is.

Seriously, does it matter? The answers are about as meaningful as a pop-culture magazine poll about which actress looks better in a particular dress. It may be sociology, but it?s not hard science. Anyway, here are the most serious worries, according to adults:

    1. Lack of exercise
    2. Childhood obesity
    3. Smoking and tobacco use
    4. Drug abuse
    5. Bullying
    6. Stress
    7. Alcohol abuse
    8. Teen pregnancy
    9. Internet safety
    10. Child abuse and neglect

But? Childhood obesity, smoking and tobacco use, and drug abuse are all the same problem, and it?s called being hooked. Sure, some obese kids are not technically addicts. Some users of tobacco and various drugs are not addicts, either. But the serious, life-threatening manifestations of those conditions all grow from the same root. When the childhood obesity epidemic is regarded through the psychological food dependence-addiction lens, one addiction looks pretty much like another.

Your responses and feedback are welcome!

Bomb from World War II detonated on purpose

This is not a test. This is a video of an actual World War II-era, American-made bomb going off in the center of Munich, Germany.

According to its description on YouTube, the explosive was discovered on Monday night by workers at the site of a building that was being demolished. Officials realized that the 550-pound explosive could not be defused, and decided on a controlled detonation. In addition, the report notes:

Overnight, 2,500 residents were evacuated from the area closest to the bomb, with others living further away being told to stay in their homes.

Experts decided it was not possible to make the device safe because of its unusual fuse, which operated by means of a chemical reaction rather than the mechanical device that many Allied World War II bombs used.

Spiegel noted that the explosion blew out windows, caused some rooftops to catch on fire, and half of one house to collapse. But there are no reports of injuries. But this will certainly not be the last blast associated with a bomb from the past.

A bomb expert told the publication, "Unexploded bombs are becoming more dangerous by the day through material fatigue as a result of aging and through erosion of safety elements in the trigger mechanisms."

The video shows a spectacular explosion lighting up the night sky in a city neighborhood dense with buildings.

FACT CHECK: Anti-Obama film asserts president's 'anti-colonialism' but is muddy on facts

WASHINGTON - "2016: Obama's America," a new conservative film exploring the roots of President Barack Obama's political views, took in $6.2 million to make it one of the highest-grossing movies of last weekend. The film, written and narrated by conservative scholar Dinesh D'Souza, argues that Obama was heavily influenced by what D'Souza calls the "anti-colonial" beliefs of his father, Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan academic who was largely absent from the president's life.

To document that claim, D'Souza travels to Kenya to interview members of Obama's extended family as well as to Hawaii and Indonesia, where Obama grew up. He also cites several actions and policy positions Obama has taken to support the thesis that Obama is ideologically rooted in the Third World and harbours contempt for the country that elected him its first black president.

The assertion that Obama's presidency is an expression of his father's political beliefs, which D'Souza first made in 2010 in his book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," is almost entirely subjective and a logical stretch at best.

It's true that Obama's father lived most of his life in Kenya, an African nation once colonized by the British, and that Obama's reverence for his absent father frames his bestselling memoir. D'Souza even sees clues in the book's title: "Notice it says 'Dreams From My Father,' not 'of' my father," D'Souza says.

But it's difficult to see how Obama's political leanings could have been so directly shaped by his father, as D'Souza claims. The elder Obama left his wife and young son, the future president, when Obama was 2 and visited his son only once, when Obama was 10. But D'Souza frames that loss as an event that reinforced rather than weakened the president's ties to his father, who died in a car crash when Obama was in college.

D'Souza interviews Paul Vitz, a New York University psychologist who has studied the impact of absent fathers on children. In Obama's case, Vitz says, the abandonment meant "he has the tension between the Americanism and his Africanism. He himself is an intersection of major political forces in his own psychology."

From there, the evidence D'Souza uses to support his assertion starts to grow thin.

D'Souza says Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, shared his father's left-leaning views. After living in Indonesia for several years, D'Souza said, Dunham sent the younger Obama to live with his grandparents in Hawaii so he would not be influenced by her second husband, Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian who worked for American oil companies and fought communists as a member of the Indonesian army.

"Ann separates Barry from Lolo's growing pro-Western influence," D'Souza says in the film. Obama has said his mother had sent him back to Hawaii so he would be educated in the United States.

In Hawaii, D'Souza asserts with no evidence, Obama sympathized with native Hawaiians who felt they had been marginalized by the American government when Hawaii was becoming a state. D'Souza also asserts ? again with no evidence ? that Obama had been coached to hold those views at Punahou, the prestigious prep school he attended in Honolulu.

"Oppression studies, if you will. Obama got plenty of that when he was here in Punahou," D'Souza says, standing on the campus.

In Kenya, D'Souza interviews Philip Ochieng, a lifelong friend of the president's father, who claims the elder Obama was "totally anti-colonial." Ochieng also discloses some of his own political views, complaining about U.S. policy in Afghanistan and Iraq and saying the U.S. refuses to "tame" Israel, which he calls a "Trojan horse in the Middle East." D'Souza seems to suggest that if a onetime friend of Obama's late father holds those opinions, so too must the president himself.

D'Souza then goes through a list of actions Obama has taken as president to support his thesis. Many of them don't hold water:

? D'Souza rightly argues that the national debt has risen to $16 trillion under Obama. But he never mentions the explosion of debt that occurred under Obama's predecessor, Republican George W. Bush, nor the 2008 global financial crisis that provoked a shock to the U.S. economy.

? D'Souza says Obama is "weirdly sympathetic to Muslim jihadists" in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He does not mention that Obama ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and the drone strikes that have killed dozens of terrorists in the region.

?D'Souza wrongly claims that Obama wants to return control of the Falkland Islands from Britain to Argentina. The U.S. refused in April to endorse a final declaration on Argentina's claim to the islands at the Summit of the Americas, provoking criticism from other Latin American nations.

?D'Souza says Obama has "done nothing" to impede Iran's nuclear ambitions, despite the severe trade and economic sanctions his administration has imposed on Iran to halt its suspected nuclear program. Obama opposes a near-term military strike on Iran, either by the U.S. or Israel, although he says the U.S. will never tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran.

? D'Souza says Obama removed a bust of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office because Churchill represented British colonialism. White House curator William Allman said the bust, which had been on loan, was already scheduled to be returned before Obama took office. Another bust of Churchill is on display in the president's private residence, the White House says.

FAA to study use of electronics on planes

It's going to be a while before airline passengers can use iPads and other electronic devices during the whole flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that it is starting a process to study the issue, with a timeline that means it will take at least until March 2013 for a recommendation ? and maybe longer for action.

In March the FAA raised hopes that it might loosen rules for electronic devices by saying it would "explore ways to bring together all of the key stakeholders involved."

Smartphones and tablet computers are common in the passenger cabin, and pilots are using iPads in the cockpit. But passengers have to shut off electronic devices when the plane is below 10,000 feet because of worries that signals emitted by the devices might interfere with electronics in the cockpit.

The FAA doesn't actually ban the devices. But it says airlines can only allow devices that have been tested and proven not to interfere with the plane's electronics. With thousands of devices on the market and new ones coming out each day, airlines simply ban them all during takeoff and landing.

The FAA will form a committee this fall to study the issue for six months and then make recommendations. The FAA often uses such Aviation Rulemaking Committees when it is considering changes, and their deliberations often last months, sometimes years.

This group will include people from mobile technology companies, airplane makers, pilots and flight attendants, airlines, and passenger associations. The FAA will also ask for public input.

In a written statement, acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said the agency wants "information to help airlines "decide if they can allow more widespread use of electronic devices in today's aircraft."

The FAA said allowing cellphone use during flights isn't under consideration.

FAA spokeswoman Brie Sachse said the members of the new committee have not yet been chosen. She declined to say why the process is taking so long.

Sharapova eases into 2nd round at US Open

NEW YORK (AP) ? Maria Sharapova's stomach ache turned out to be nothing more than that.

That lopsided loss she suffered at the Olympics ? well, that may have only been a false alarm, as well.

Playing her first match since a blowout loss to Serena Williams in London and a stomach virus that forced her out of two tuneup tournaments, Sharapova returned to tennis in fine fashion Monday at the U.S. Open.

The third-seeded Russian came back from a three-week break and defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-2, 6-2 in a stress-free, 67-minute first-round match at blustery Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sharapova's victory in front of the half-filled stadium was her first match since a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Williams at the London Games in a gold-medal showdown that looked and felt more like one of these first-round wipeouts Sharapova usually inflicts.

Turns out, Sharapova was dealing with some stomach pain then, which only got worse a few weeks later. She went to the doctor for a series of tests, including an ultrasound to see if she was pregnant. The test turned up negative.

"Just because of the pain I was having, it was really weird," said Sharapova, who is engaged to basketball player Sasha Vujacic. "They told me I was fine, not pregnant. Then, I'm like, 'Can I get my money back?'"

It has been an eventful summer for one of tennis' biggest stars.

After serving as the flagbearer for Russia, then finishing as the silver medalist at the Olympics at Wimbledon, Sharapova's original plan was to come to North America and play in tuneups in Montreal and Cincinnati to acclimate herself to the hard courts.

But the Olympics took a lot out of Sharapova, and when she arrived in Canada, she got knocked down by a stomach ache so bad that she went to the doctor.

It turned out to be a virus ? her body's way of telling her to take it easy, she said, so she withdrew from the events and took a few weeks off.

"It was a nice break in a way, but after so many weeks of practicing, you're just eager to get back on the court," she said.

She looked eager to get off the court, as well, showing very few signs of rust against her 88th-ranked opponent.

Wearing a soft-pink dress with a touch of mauve ? more subdued than what she usually wears for, say, a nighttime appearance ? Sharapova served five aces and maxed out at 115 mph. It took her 31 minutes to finish the first set and she was up 3-0 in the second before Czink got her only break.

That made things only mildly interesting, and only for a very short time. Leading 4-2, Sharapova won one point by chasing a ball almost into the stands on the sidelines, reaching out to get it back, then closing in on the net to win the point. Czink stood there shaking her head, hardly believing what she had just seen.

Sharapova said it was not problem getting the blowout loss to Williams out of her mind.

"It doesn't stick with you," she said. "I mean, personally, I've been part of many different types of matches in my career. Looking back at that week, it was really special. It was so hectic."

The routine win closed out a day session filled mostly with by-the-book results: Defending champion Sam Stosur's 6-1, 6-1 victory over Croatia's Petra Martic, No. 3 Andy Murray's 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 win over Alex Bogomolov Jr., of Russia and, of course, a two-hour rain delay at a tournament that has finished on a Monday for four straight years because of bad weather.

No. 1 Roger Federer's quest for a sixth U.S. Open title began later Monday against American Donald Young.

Before Federer played, No. 23 Kim Clijsters extended her Flushing Meadows winning streak to 22 straight matches, defeating the youngest player in the field, 16-year-old American Victoria Duval, 6-3, 6-1.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka, the Australian Open champion, began the quest for her second Grand Slam title of the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexandra Panova.

Stosur wrapped up her win before the rain came, and any thought that the early round jitters might get to her ? the way they did in first-round exits at the Australian Open and the Olympics or a second-round loss at Wimbledon ? were over before the crowd even got settled.

The seventh-seeded Aussie won the first 19 points ? she was five away from a perfect set before she double-faulted ? and needed only 51 minutes to finish the match.

"It did pop into my head for a split second," Stosur said of the prospect of a golden set. "Then I hit the double fault and it was erased and I was quickly on with the next point."

Murray is trying to become the first man to win the Olympics and the U.S. Open in the same year. His first match of 2012 at Flushing Meadows gave him a decent test ? with just a little something to worry about.

He fell down a break to open the first two sets but won the last five games of the first and last four games of the second, then cruised in the third, which he began by shouting "focus."

"It's an important stage of the match, when he was up 4-3 in the second with a break, then I won three games in a row and momentum was with me," Murray said. "You want to win the matches as quickly as possible."

He finished with 46 winners to 24 for Bogomolov, and handled the array of drop shots Bogomolov tried on him. Leading 4-1 in the third set, Murray grabbed his left hamstring while lunging for a ball near the net. But he closed out the match with no problem.

"Maybe I didn't take enough fluid," Murray said.

That could have been the problem No. 22 Florian Mayer encountered, as well. He withdrew while trailing 19-year-old American wild card Jack Sock 6-3, 6-2, 3-2, saying he felt dizzy and had blurred vision.

"He played the perfect match," Mayer said. "He hit the forehand fast, didn't really make any mistakes, just played really good."

Sock advanced to the second round for the second straight year. He'll be joined by Americans James Blake, a four-set winner over Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, 23rd-seeded Mardy Fish, who beat Go Soeda of Japan in three sets, and Tim Smyczek, who won 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 over Bobby Reynolds in a 3-hour, 33-minute, all-American matchup between qualifiers.

"It's obviously the biggest tournament for us Americans but I'm just trying to go about my business and treat it like any other week," said Smyczek, ranked 179th, after recording his first victory in a Grand Slam tournament.

Other winners included 24th-seeded Marcel Granollers on the men's side and 11th-seeded Marion Bartoli, No. 9 Li Na and No. 5 Petra Kvitova in the women's draw.

Andy Roddick, Serena Williams and defending champion Novak Djokovic were scheduled to play Tuesday.

Green tea extract may treat skin cancer | Lancastria.net Yea ...

    27 August, 2012 by Neuschwanstein

A chemical found in green tea has been used to successfully treat two types of skin cancer, scientists say.

The extract, known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), has no impact when consumed in tea but when applied to cancerous cells in laboratory tests it shrank or removed two-thirds of tumours it was used on within one month.

Scientists at the universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow, who carried out the research, found it had no side-effects on other cells or tissue. They created a cell with EGCg and transferrin, a protein that naturally targets and latches on to the surface of cancer cells, and applied it to tumours.

Tests were done on two types of skin cancer: epidermoid carcinoma which forms like scales on the surface of the skin and melanoma which often develops in people who have moles on their skin.

In both studies, 40% of tumours vanished, while 30% of tumours in carcinoma cases and 20% in melanoma cases shrank. A further 10% of melanoma tumours were stabilised, so did not grow or shrink.

Around 10,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with melanoma each year, with the majority women, according to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

Anti-cancer properties of EGCg were established in earlier laboratory tests elsewhere. Scientists at other universities around the world have experimented with it to treat prostate cancer and leukaemia.

Lead researcher Dr Christine Dufes, from the University of Strathclyde, said: ?These are very encouraging results which we hope could pave the way for new and effective cancer treatments.

?When we used our method, the green tea extract reduced the size of many of the tumours every day, in some cases removing them altogether. By contrast, the extract had no effect at all when it was delivered by other means, as every one of these tumours continued to grow. This research could open doors to new treatments for what is still one of the biggest killer diseases in many countries.?

MPs 'must keep green belt pledge'

Building on green belt land "is not the path to lasting economic prosperity", countryside campaigners have warned the government.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has claimed countryside around English towns and cities is threatened by bids to build about 81,000 homes.

Recent changes to the planning system have prompted concerns that protection for the green belt will be weakened.

A government spokesman said it was committed to protecting green spaces.

The CPRE has suggested that current proposals, which are either out for consultation, submitted for planning permission or have been approved, would cover an area of unspoilt countryside the size of Slough in Berkshire.

    ?Start Quote

Ministers have consistently maintained that they value the green belt - now is the time to put these words into action?

End Quote Paul Milner Senior planning officer for the CPRE

These plans include the expansion of Birmingham Airport, proposals for three freight terminals, an open cast coal mine in Nottinghamshire and a hotel and golf course in Surrey.

    'False promise'

The campaign group added that about 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of land was earmarked for business parks and housing developments.

CPRE senior planning officer Paul Miner said the government should look to regenerate urban areas rather than build on unspoilt green space.

"It [the green belt] helps regenerate our cities and stops them sprawling into rural areas. As a result no-one is ever too far from true, green English countryside.

"In times of economic slowdown, politicians can sometimes be tempted by the false promise of an easy construction boom. But destroying the countryside is not the path to lasting economic prosperity."

Mr Miner said that "sustainable economic improvement" was only possible by "the sort of urban regeneration that has already done much to rejuvenate many of our largest cities."

"Ministers have consistently maintained that they value the green belt and want to see it protected. Now is the time to put these words into action," he added.

In March 2012, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) published a new planning framework which included a section ensuring green belt land is protected.

A draft version of the framework was amended to encourage greater development of brownfield sites, following pressure from the CPRE and other countryside campaign groups.

    'Green lung'

Ministers said the policy, along with the Localism Act, gave communities a greater say on planning and scrapped "top-down targets".

However, the CPRE warned that the document puts pressure on local authorities to allow building in the green belt to meet housing and expansion targets.

A DCLG spokesman said: "The green belt is an important protection against urban sprawl, providing a 'green lung' around towns and cities.

"The coalition agreement commits the government to safeguarding green belt and other environmental designations, which they have been in the new National Planning Policy Framework.

"The Localism Act allows for the abolition of Regional Spatial Strategies which sought to bulldoze the green belt around 30 towns and cities across the country."

Concrete Paver Molds: The most recent Trend in Property ...

As a native Californian, I?ve come to accept that dwelling exteriors are practically constantly constructing utilizing either siding or stucco. Bricks are used sparingly, if at all, and stonework is normally confined to indoor tiles and outdoor patio stones, river rock set in gardens, and exposed aggregate patios. More frequently than not, although, walkways, patios, and driveways are simply poured concrete.

Personally, I?ve constantly been attracted to stonework of all kinds. Whether or not it really is a cobblestone driveway, a fireplace produced from river rock, or even a ledge stone wall, I feel that stonework adds beauty and interest to a household. Given that stonework can expense upwards of twelve dollars a square foot, however, I?ve in no way been able to afford to remodel my home using the stones, rocks, and tiles that so attract me.

Then I ran across an post about concrete paver molds, and discovered that there is a new trend in home improvement: creating your own, custom colored, concrete stones, rocks, tiles, and bricks. I?ve tried it, and using the ideal preparation and instructions, have located that I can make my personal developing materials for just pennies. In a nutshell, here?s how it functions?.

    Concrete Molds

Initially, you will need to begin with top quality concrete molds (despite the fact that some individuals contact them cement molds or plaster molds). You will find organizations that make concrete stone molds, patio molds, concrete paver molds, stone veneer molds, and brick veneer molds. Depending on the kind of stone or tile, the mold may well cover an location ranging from about 4 square feet to about seven square feet. A ledge stone mold, for example, could produce 16 ledge stones, while a river rock mold may well generate 12 river rocks. Ideally, you should get various molds so that you?ve a rocks or stones having a number of appearances. Remember, although, that you could use various colors or turn stones in various direction in order that it doesn?t appear like you are employing duplicate stone or rock shapes.

    Preparing Concrete Molds

Once you have your concrete molds and are prepared to start your project, you will need to apply a mold release product so you can simply take out the stones, tiles, or bricks when they are finished. Whilst some companies suggest working with motor oil, the run off is negative for the environment. Some of the newer mold release goods is often sprayed in to the concrete molds with a spray bottle ? an a lot preferable process.

    Mixing Colors

The artistry in creating your own concrete rocks, tiles, and bricks is in obtaining and mixing the colors you like. Initially, you mix a base color into a concrete and sand mixture. Once you have this base color, you could add additional amounts and combinations of color to give you the variety you seek. Indeed, you are able to generate an infinite number of colors basically by adjusting the color densities. The top colors are created from synthetic iron oxides, despite the fact that some people have had success with natural oxides, ceramic stains, and even latex paint.

    Concrete Pouring and Curing

Your concrete mixture needs to be reasonably stiff and not soupy. Employing a scoop, you pour the concrete mixture into the concrete paver molds and fill the mold for the top. Should you basically want a veneer stone or tile, you can partially fill the mold.

If you?ve ever worked with concrete, you know that it really is essential to acquire all the air bubbles out following a pour. This could be achieved by bouncing the concrete stone molds up and down, or by purchasing and employing a vibrating table. Next, cover the mold in plastic and let it rest out with the direct sunlight.

The longer you let the concrete remedy, the stronger it?ll be. The concrete molds and be unmolded just after 24 hours, but it?s best to wait longer. As soon as you release the stones, tiles, or bricks, you should rewrap them in plastic to preserve the moisture and let them remedy for an additional two weeks. Then, you merely need to apply sealant to your creations, and they will be prepared to install.

I?ve discovered that able to create a lovely stone pathway, tile entryway, or river rock fireplace is incredibly rewarding. And to consider that it all began when I read an write-up about concrete paver molds.

Grow Fresh, Organic Produce With These Tips - Family Farm and ...

Holistic lifestyles are becoming more and more popular as the organic trend starts to spread out. People who live this kind of lifestyle usually grow herbs and plants to enjoy the health benefits of this vegetation; they must be grown organically. If you?d like to grow your own organic plants, read on for some useful tips.

Ward off certain diseases that plague plants with the use of aspirin. Try dissolving around one and one half aspirins into around 2 gallons of water for your plants. All you have to do is spray the plants with this solution and you should see good results. You should spray your plants about once every three weeks.

Get your children interested in helping with your organic garden. You can provide a good learning experience that your children can appreciate the more they learn on how to grow healthy produce.

Within your composting heap, ensure that there is an equal split of dried and green plant materials. ?Green? material refers to things like wilted flowers, weeds, leaves from your yard, and grass clippings. Examples of dried plant material are sawdust, shredded paper, straw, cut-up woody material, and cardboard. Never put meat in your compost or even the waste from your family pets. These can harbor diseases that won?t be killed by the composting process.

Plants that are natural companions are wonderful in a garden. Certain varieties of plants can actually help other plants grow when they are planted nearby. Chemically-based products can be avoided if you let the plants deal with insects and naturally fertilize each other. One example of companion plants in action is the ability of foul-smelling herbs and vegetables to repel insects.

To improve the efficiency of your organic garden, try digging tiny ditches between each of the rows you have planted. This well help rainwater to flow towards your plants, so you don?t have to water your garden as often. This conserves water, which translates into conserving money.

Sprouting seeds need less warmth than before. Sprouting plants can be removed from the heat source. Uncover your containers; the plastic wrap traps humidity, so you need to remove it to stop your plants from overheating. Observe your seeds carefully so that you can make these changes as soon as they start sprouting.

    Organic Methods

Think carefully about any product you buy to use in your garden. For example, purchase organic fertilizer rather than chemical fertilizer. Compost is one thing you can use. One advantage to using organic gardening methods as opposed to non-organic methods is that non-organic methods have a small chance of reducing soil quality or poisoning the water table.

When it is harvest time, use a laundry basket. The laundry basket is a perfect strainer for any produce run off. Rinse the produce while it sits in the basket, the extra water will go through the holes in the basket.

If you are having problems with aphids in the organic garden then you should try using good ?old fashioned? water that is soapy, which may be the trick you are looking for to solve the predicament you are in. Just spray the plant?s stems, leaves and buds using a light soapy water solution and follow it up using another spray of fresh and clean water.

You can create an excellent organic pesticide by mixing any member of the onion genus with water. Chop the garlic, chives and onions up into very fine pieces, and then mix with half a cup of water and strain into a spray bottle.

Weeds are very hard to get rid of in a regular garden as well as an organic garden. This method is much safer for your other plants.

    Organic Garden

A great way to ensure that your organic garden will do well is to keep a section of your land unspoiled. The natural wildlife will spring up and make for a perfect organic habitat. This can be a good area for the types of insects that pollinate plants. It can also be a sanctuary for birds, which will help some plants thrive. This can greatly improve the production of your organic garden.

Plant your organic garden in the shade. Shade gardens are designed to be hardy and low maintenance. They don?t require as much watering, and that can save you a lot of time and effort. While the plants in shade gardens grow slower, so do the weeds.

A soaker hose is the best choice for watering an organic garden. Water seeps slowly from a soaker house, and can be aimed right at the roots, leaving leaves dry. These use much less water than the sprinklers and are less time-consuming than hand-watering your plants.

High soil quality means higher quality plants, and high-quality plants are more resistant to disease and insect infestations. While you still have insects present, they won?t cause any damage. That way, everybody is happy.

    Organic Gardening

As you pick up more tips, acquire new techniques, and learn more in general about organic gardening, you will find organic gardening becoming easier for you. Remember that these tips are only the starting point

(AP) ? The few hundred protesters gathered under rainy skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump heavy rains on Tampa won't deter them from trying to get out their message that America needs to change, especially for the middle class.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" are melting on a warm, sticky day. Occupy protesters say it represents the melting away of the middle class in America.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies in the city of some 25,000 people and say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy is a left-leaning protest group of people in their mid-20s who generally believe that the financial system is stacked against a majority of people.

Gaurapp and Landecker say that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with heavy rainfall on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

The protests stayed small also by mid-afternoon.

The weather isn't a deterrent to 52 year-old Donald Butner, who says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

The protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America. Often, younger people make up the Occupy protests, but in Tampa, several older people joined the marchers.

That included the 54-year-old Landecker , who spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

One year of Tim Cook as CEO of Apple

Exactly one year ago today, Tim Cook took over the leadership of Apple from Steve Jobs. CNET's Josh Lowensohn reports that his first year at the company has been a huge success.

Not everyone believed that Cook, who had filled in for Jobs twice during his battle with pancreatic cancer, would keep the company on its incredible journey. When the announcement of his appointment as CEO was made, Apple's stock dropped more than $6 a share. But now the stock is up 44 percent over its value at this time in 2011 and Apple was recently named the most valuable company in the world in terms of market capitalization.

During Cook's first year, the company continued to see revenue growth outpacing the rest of the industry during a worldwide recession, continues to fight patent battles against rivals in court to assure that Apple (in the words of Cook) "not become the developer for the world," and has released follow-ons to its highly successful products.

However, some Wall Street analysts believe that Apple's future is bleak without the charisma of Jobs at the helm. Forrester CEO George Colony was quoted in April as saying that "Apple's momentum will carry it for 24 to 48 months, but without the arrival of a new charismatic leader it will move from being a great company to being a good company."

Cook has made several mistakes. He hired John Browett to replace Ron Johnson as the head of Apple's retail operations, and Browett tried playing with staffing at some stores. That resulted in rumors that employees were going to be laid off or work fewer hours, forcing the company to publicly announce that it had been trying out a new staffing plan and had gone back to the old and trusted system. Widespread criticism of iPhone ads using celebrities and the recent "Genius" ads shown during the 2012 London Olympics are considered another faux pas.

On the other hand, Cook has been visible in ways that Jobs would never have been. He visited Foxconn plants during criticism of the way that the manufacturer treated its employees. He created a matching charitable donation plan for employees, and set up better employee discounts for Apple products. He even made a personal donation of $100 million to the Stanford (CA) hospitals and PROJECT (RED), while Jobs wasn't known as a philanthropist.

The long-term future of Apple cannot be foretold, but after the first year of Tim Cook at the helm, it looks like the company is doing just fine. Be sure to read TUAW blogger Michael Grothaus's post from last year talking about his personal experiences with Cook.

Serbia to Attend Non-Aligned Meeting in Iran :: Balkan Insight

Serbia's delegation will be led by the Foreign Minister, Ivan Mrkic, but it is still uncertain whether President Tomislav Nikolic will join the delegation.?

Nikolic received an invitation in July from the special envoy of the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Seska Stanojlovic, a foreign affairs experts, says attending the meeting in Teheran marks a continuation of the foreign policy of the previous minister, Vuk Jeremic, which centred on blocking international recognition of the independence of the former province of Kosovo.

?To stop further the recognition of Kosovo, Jermic renewed the relationship that former Yugoslavia had with the Non-Aligned Movement.

"We should wait and see the orientation of the new minister, but as far as I see he will continue a policy in which the Non-Aligned Movement is closer to us than the EU,? Stanojlovic said.

Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, also announced his presence at the meeting, where he aims "to express the concern of the international community over Iran?s nuclear programme, about terrorism and the crisis in Syria?.

?If the UN Secretary General confirmed his presence at the meeting, it is also important for Serbia to be present. But it should be also seen if the European Union will be present,? Ognjen Pribicevic, a political analyst, said.

However, he also believes that Brussels will not hold it against Serbia if it participates in the Iran meeting.

According to Teheran, 100 countries already confirmed their presence at the meeting. It is expected that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be present, as well as Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

The Non-Aligned Movement was founded after the Second World War as a group of states who declined to align themselves with either the Soviet or the US-led blocs. As of 2012, the movement had 120 members and 21 observer countries.

The organization was founded in Belgrade in 1961, and was largely the brainchild of Yugoslavia's president, Josip Broz Tito, India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, Egypt's second president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Ghana's first president Kwame Nkrumah and Indonesia's first president,Sukarno.

Rossopomodoro | Riyadh Eats Restaurant Review Guide

I best enjoy a restaurant when I know what to expect of its cuisine so a little search about Rossopomodoro introduced me further to Naples, the home city of this restaurant, where pizza originated. (And thus the term, ?Neapolitan?). Well, if pizza originated in Rossopomodoro?s home city, how can they go wrong in making it?

I was excited to try their traditionally-cooked pizza so my friends and I chose Fru Fru, the trio of flavors in one oval dough to get a taste of three in one. The freshness and rich taste of the ingredients are really evident on each square slice. The margherita, named after Queen Margherita?s visit to Naples, is simple but lovely to bite. The tomato sauce rich ? but not overwhelming. The middle portion of salami and ricotta also delicious and my favorite of the bunch. The rocket leaves and parmesan part was interesting; the bitter-mustardy taste of the leaves went well with the sharp, complex taste of the cheese shavings. The pizza dough is chewy, to the point that it almost feels and tastes like the thick Arabic bread available across Riyadh.

The meatball appetizer, Polpettuccia, wasn?t as good as we had hoped. We liked the beef strips though. Their Verdummara salad was bland and we had to ask for more dressing. Still, even with a new dose of the white salty sauce, the salad didn?t taste much better.

In contrast, the Ravioli was delicious. The ricotta, basil, and creamy tangerine tomato sauce went superbly together. However, 55 riyals for 4 pieces of filled pasta may be a little steep for some. While the fresh ingredients are also evident in their salad, meatball appetizer, and pasta, I suggest you stick to the pizza.

This Neapolitan restaurant in Riyadh is housed in a lovely white building on Tahlia Street. The red sign of Rossopomodoro is brilliant in the morning sun; even during the night when the busy street is brightly-lit. As for the atmosphere inside, its really quite nice with a rustic but vibrant feel with touches of wood here and there.

Ladies will enjoy the tall chairs for conversations and superior view of the huge pizza oven over dinner, while families can choose to dine in paneled tables for privacy. Rossopomodoro has a lot of branches worldwide and the Riyadh branch is the second one in Saudi Arabia (the first having been reviewed over at Jeddah Food here). So definitely, one cannot ignore Rossopomodo. It is, after all, a slice of success.

South Africa mourns mine violence victims

Christian hymns sung in Zulu and Xhosa rang out from a white tent near the site of South Africa's bloodiest police action since apartheid, as the nation mourned the dead Thursday.

"We are shocked as a nation about what happened. None of us ever thought it would happen again," Anglican Bishop Johannes Seoka told the thousands of people gathered near Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine.

Police gunned down 34 miners one week ago during a wildcat strike that had already left eight other workers and two policemen dead.

After the bishop's remarks, the crowd burst into an apartheid-era Zulu funeral song, "Senzeni na", which means "What have we done?"

"Police and soldiers, what have we done to be killed?" the crowd sang.

Police kept their distance as tensions still ran high among workers, with security remarkably lighter than the heavy forces deployed here for more than a week.

"We don't want to see police today, they must stay far away," said Nkosinathi, a Lonmin miner who declined to give his last name for fear of reprisal.

"They bring back very ugly, very painful memories, they must move away."

Notably absent were politicians, who kept away to allow religious leaders to conduct the proceedings.

South African President Jacob Zuma, who met with miners on Wednesday, was in Pretoria where he was expected to unveil his judicial commission of inquiry into the police crackdown.

Police are also investigating the killings, while the independent police watchdog is looking into the conduct of the officers who opened fire at the crowd that was armed mainly with spears, clubs and machetes.

Lonmin and the nearby Impala Platinum mine closed to allow workers to attend the memorial, the centrepiece of ceremonies held across the country, as many of the victims were migrant workers whose bodies have already returned to their home villages.

The other major service was in Mthatha, in the rural Eastern Cape province, that was home to 28 of the 34 killed by police.

Grief engulfed the Methodist church hall, with relatives of the dead weeping and wailing loudly.

"The Marikana massacre must be a lesson. It must unite the workers across the country to fight for equality," Mthatha mayor Dingaani Myolo said.

Other services were planned for later in the day in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The new Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), whose emergence has fomented violence at platinum mines since January, held its own service early Thursday at the Implats mine.

Labour disputes in South Africa's platinum belt have turned increasingly violent this year.

Three people died at the Implats mine during a wildcat strike that ended in February. Ten were killed at Lonmin in the days after the illegal strike began on August 10.

The violence has been blamed on union rivalries, as an aggressive AMCU seeks to gain membership from the dominant National Union of Mineworkers, one of the country's most powerful unions and a major ally of the ruling African National Congress.

About 3,000 rock drill operators have spearheaded the strike at Lonmin, which employs a total of 28,000 people there. The drillers also appear to be at the centre of disputes at nearby mines.

Zuma met with the strikers on Wednesday, seeking to ease tensions and to address concerns that the government has ignored their plight.

His labour minister, Mildred Oliphant, also held talks with AMCU late Tuesday.

The strikers are demanding a monthly wage of 12,500 rand ($1,500, 1,200 euros), saying they currently earn 4,000 rand.

Lonmin says that if bonus and other perks are included, the rock drillers earn around 11,000 rand, with a nine percent increase set for October.
