Study: Sex before marriage adversely impacts relationship

Sex before marriage can lead to unhappy marital relationships, according to a study from New York?s Cornell University. According to the researchers abstinence in a courtship is a healthy approach to building up a gradual sexual relationship.
The study found that early sexual satisfaction stunts a healthy relationship that lacks caring and understanding.


The research based on 600 couples that included all women under 45 probed relationship issues involving communication and conflict including commitment, intimacy and sexual satisfaction.


The scores of men and women followed a similar trend according to which when sex was delayed for one month, the results were better.


The study claimed, ?Precocious, premarital sexual activities may have lasting effects on relationship quality,? while higher levels of relationship quality were observed with postponement of sexual involvement.


The study recommends exploration and decision making about the relationship at the time of courtship when ?partners assess compatibility, make commitments and building on emotional and physical intimacy.?


Another 2010 study had also arrived at the same conclusion. This study conducted by the Brigham Young University's School of Family Life in Utah and published in the Journal of Family Psychology, questioned more than 2,000 married couples. According to Prof Dean Busby, who carried this study: ?There's more to a relationship than sex, but we did find that those who waited longer were happier with the sexual aspect of their relationship. I think it's because they've learned to talk and have the skills to work with issues that come up.?


According to the findings of this study couples who waited until after their wedding night reported their relationship stability level 22 percent higher than those who did not. Additionally with abstinence the value of relationship satisfaction rose by 20 percent, communication level was up by 12 percent and the sexual quality improved by 15 percent.


However, the study makes no statement on prevalence rate of premarital sex, nor does it comment on whether there is generational shift in the prevalence rate of premarital sex.


In fact yet another study makes a bold claim that ?even grandma had pre-marital sex?. According to this study more than 9 out of 10 Americans have had sex before marriage, to which women born in the 40s are no exception. In other words premarital sex is a norm for the vast majority of Americans going back decades.
