Volunteers work on housing rehabilitation project

Local building materials retailer Parr Lumber provides lunches to volunteers who were working on making upgrades to a home in northeast Portland associated with the non-profit Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives.

A hands-on home improvement project led by the non-profit Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives is making upgrades to PCRI rental homes in northeast Portland.

Volunteers from all skill levels this month worked alongside Cascadia Green Building Council?s Emerging Professionals, to implement upgrades to improve the efficiency, health and durability of the homes, including air sealing and winterization and water efficiency.

Parr Lumber, a leading building materials retailer, provided lunches for the volunteers.

?It?s incredible to see the positive changes a few individuals can make,? said David Hamilll, chief executive officer of Parr Lumber.

The Emerging Professionals and Andrew Morphis of Green Hammer Construction, tackled projects to make homes healthier, more comfortable and more efficient.

?Existing carpet was removed to expose wood floors that were ready for refinishing. Old kitchen cabinets were deconstructed to make way for new, more usable ones. Windows that were previously painted shut were once again made operable for fresh-air ventilation.? Insulation was improved and volunteers slathered mastic on the heating ducts to ensure they operated as efficiently as possible.?All of the materials that volunteers removed were carefully sorted to enable recycling and keep as much as possible out of the landfill.

PCRI?s Executive Director Maxine Fitzpatrick greeted the volunteers before they started on the project.? She thanked them for their service, adding that their volunteer efforts are priceless in supporting PCRI?s ability to provide below-market rate rental homes to residents who rely on these opportunities to stabilize their lives and return to self-sufficiency.

What is a Roth IRA and How Does it Work?

Do you know about the Roth IRA?

Saving for your retirement is important.

You need to have money saved by the time you retire so that you can afford your expenses when you are physically and mentally unable to work.

When people talk retirement, the Roth IRA often comes up.

Rightfully so.

It?s an excellent tool to help you save more money for your retirement. I?ve used it in the past, in addition to my company?s 401K, to help me save for my own retirement needs.

Here are some characteristics of people who have a Roth IRA:

• They may be just getting started with retirement investing and looking for a place to put their savings.
• They may use a company 401K, but they are looking for an additional place to save.
• They want to save a lot of money on taxes when they withdraw their retirement savings.
• They want to have more control over their investment options and the investing fees they pay.
• They want more control over their retirement savings withdrawals (i.e. use the money for a first home, major medical emergency, etc.).

Sound good? If you?re wondering what a Roth IRA is and how it works, I?m going to try to answer that for you in plain English below.

First Came the Traditional IRA

To understand the Roth IRA, it?s important to understand it?s predecessor, the Traditional IRA. The Traditional IRA and the Roth IRA are both tax-advantaged places to hold your retirement investments. Meaning, there is some type of tax savings involved. The U.S. Government created them so that you?d be encouraged to save more for your own retirement.

With a Traditional IRA, you place pre-tax dollars into the account and you don?t have to pay taxes on the contributions or earning until you start withdrawing the money at 59 and 1/2. In short, with a Traditional IRA, you get a tax break now, but you have to pay taxes on the earnings from the account when you retire and start cashing out.

This is almost identical to the way a 401K works. The major difference is control. With a 401K you are at the mercy of your employer?s choice of funds and expenses. With a Traditional IRA (as well as the Roth), you get to decide where to open the account, what to put in it, and if you want investments with low costs.

The Roth IRA Flipped Retirement Savings On Its Head

The Roth IRA is taxed just the opposite of the Traditional IRA and 401K. You place after-tax dollars into the account, and you don?t pay taxes on the contributions or earnings EVER, as long as the money is taken out in what is called a qualified withdrawal.

Because this account is so great, the government decided to put limits on it: both the amount of contributions that can be made each year and the amount of income a person can make and still contribute. In short, you can?t put an endless amount of money into the account and rich people need not participate. Be sure to review the contribution and income limits in more detail before starting up a Roth IRA.

It?s important to stress the concept that IRAs are simply places to hold your investments. They are not investments in and of themselves. You have to put something in them. Most people put some combination of stocks, bonds, and cash in their IRAs.

One last note about the Roth IRA: you have to go out and open one up for yourself. Your employer won?t do this for you. But this isn?t a negative. It?s a positive feature. Because you have complete control, you can decide where to open your Roth IRA, what to invest in, and you?ll never lose the ability to contribute if and when you change jobs.

Steps to Making the Roth IRA Work for You

So now that you have the basic concepts down, let?s look at the steps to making a Roth IRA work for you.

1. Decide if you want to invest for retirement using a Roth IRA. In can be used in addition to, or in place of, a company 401K.
2. Determine if you are eligible for the Roth IRA based on the income limitations.
3. Open up a Roth IRA with a mutual fund company or discount broker.
4. Decide what investments you want in your Roth IRA.
5. Start making after-tax contributions to those investments within your Roth IRA.
6. Continue making contributions as long as you want and are eligible.
7. When you?re ready, start withdrawing funds tax-free.

Hopefully this post gave you a good idea of what the Roth IRA is and how it works. At the risk of repeating myself, it?s really a great tool to help you save much more for your retirement than you normally would. Taxes can really eat into your investment earnings. If you can take taxes out of the equation then you?ll be able to keep a lot more of your hard earned money.

This is a mid powered phone from Samsung's Galaxy range. I picked one up from ebay for cheap that needed a few repairs, then I sold it on. I kept it for a few weeks before I sold it, and rather enjoyed the time I used it.

It has an 800Mhz processor which is a mid level processor by todays standards, but it's more than adequate for this device. However it does mean you wont be able to play processor intensive apps, but seeing as though it's a great price for the phone, it's definitely worth the money.

The build quality is great, I have a Desire HD and after a while the battery cover and the sim card cover start to creak ALL the time, with the Ace there's no creaking, no wobbling, it just feels sturdy. It also comes with two separate back covers, a textured black one and a glossy white one, which is also a plus since device customisation these days is practically non-existent.

The phone can get a little laggy, so I'd advise an app killer application, especially if you have a branded phone. The one I bought was 02 branded and it frequently got bogged down, but that cleared up a little after I unbranded it.

Battery life is pretty decent, I can go up to 2 days on one charge with moderate usage, as in a few apps every now and again, texting/calling etc. however, if you use this phone as an actual smartphone, for internet browsing with app usage etc. you'll need to charge it every night, you could push it and not charge it, but it'd need to be charged around early afternoon time the next day.

It's also pretty good as an mp3 player, it's perfectly capable of replacing another mp3 player or iPod.

The main shortfall to this device I think is the screen. It is capacitive, so it supports multitouch, but the screen itself is distinctly average. This is most likely the reason the phone is sold at a cheaper price, as colours are washed out and faded, but overall, the price makes up for it.

Another thing that annoys me about the phone is the two capacitive buttons on the front. There are two capacitive keys and one physical key, and the two capacitive so they are only visible when they are backlit. The problem here is that they aren't always backlit, infact they only light up when you touch them, which annoys me slightly. My Desire HD lights them up whenever it thinks the room is dark enough, and why the Ace doesn't do this I'll never know. What's the point in lighting up a button AFTER you've used it? To me that seems pretty useless.

It runs on Android, but Samsung have their own overlay, it's like Samsung's equivalent to HTC's Sense. I must say I prefer their own overlay, named "Touchwiz" to the stock android feel, in the same way I prefer HTC's Sense to the stock Android feel. It makes it feel more personal and user friendly. The only bad aspect of Touchwiz is that the keyboard Samsung has implemented is absolutely awful. It's really impractical to use, and just generally isn't easy to work with. However, there are plenty of other keyboards you can download and use, so this is a minor niggle.

Overall, this device is a brilliant mid range device, it's not in the same league as my Desire HD (which is now becoming quite out dated itself) but it is definitely a decent little phone, especially with Samsung's Touchwiz overlay which makes it a pleasure to use.

Something big is going on in employers? attitudes toward leadership development for women.

A 2010 survey of leaders conducted by HR consulting firm Mercer, covering about 540 organizations in a cross-section of industries, 70% did not have a clearly defined strategy or philosophy about developing women into leaders.

A few decades ago, many organizations offered specific programs to help women advance into leadership, says Mercer?s Colleen O?Neill. Now there appears to be less certainty about what works.

Those surveyed said the biggest challenges women face in becoming leaders today are lack of role models, opportunities and support.

Respondents also showed less concern than before about developing women as leaders?most said they were somewhat or not at all concerned?something O?Neill calls ?fairly surprising? and ?quite a shift.?

Most of those polled said their organizations should pay more attention to the issue.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? The attorney for the family of a black teenager fatally shot by a neighborhood watch captain said Tuesday that the boy was talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone when the confrontation began. She did not hear the shooting.

Their phone call was discussed at a news conference that followed announcements that the U.S. Justice department would probe the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and that a local grand jury will also consider evidence in the case.

George Zimmerman, 28, claims he shot Martin in self-defense during a confrontation last month in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman spotted Martin as he was patrolling his neighborhood on a rainy evening and called 911 to report a suspicious person. Against the advice of the 911 dispatcher, Zimmerman then followed Martin, who was walking home from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles in his pocket.

Police have described Zimmerman as white; his family says he is Hispanic and not racist.

Attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents Martin's parents, said the teenager was on the phone with his girlfriend back home in Miami when he told her he was being followed. She said Martin told her someone was following him and that he was going to try to lose him. He thought he had lost Zimmerman but hadn't.

"He says, 'Oh he's right behind me, he's right behind me again,'" Crump says the girl told him. "She says run. He says I'm not going to run I'm just going to walk fast. She hears Trayvon say, 'Why are you following me?' Other voice says, 'What are you doing around here?'"

She told Crump they both repeated themselves and then she heard a scuffle begin "because (Martin's) voice changes like something interrupted his speech." She heard an altercation and then the phone call was cut off.

Within moments, according to Crump's timeline, Martin was shot. She didn't hear the gunfire.

Crump is not releasing the girl's name to protect her privacy.

Crump said he plans to turn over information about the call to federal investigators who are looking into the case. The Justice Department announced their involvement late Monday.

"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," the agency said in an emailed statement.

The federal agency said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to meet with authorities, community officials and civil rights leaders "to address tension in the community."

On Tuesday, a central Florida prosecutor also said that a grand jury will meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case. Seminole County State Attorney Norm Wolfinger urged the public to be patient as the investigation unfolds.

An online petition urging local authorities to prosecute Zimmerman has drawn more than 500,000 signatures at website Change.org

Later Tuesday, civil rights activist Al Sharpton is expected to join Sanford city leaders in an evening town hall meeting to discuss with residents how the investigation is being handled. On Monday, students held rallies on the campus of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and outside the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, where prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine if charges should be filed.
